Sixth Grade Thoughts on … “Little Miss Sumo”

The main character is trying to prove that girls can fight in the dohyo. She trains every day, and works very hard to try to win in sumo. People think that girls can’t enter the dojo, which is a fighting place for the best. Hiyori was a hard working person, she deserved to win in dojo, but she lost. — LH
I think that this is intriguing and tells you to never give up. In the show the lady kept trying for 6 months and that takes a long time and never gave up. Even when she gets second she does not give up on sumo is trying to go and be number one and make it into the finals again. This shows that if you never give up you can achieve anything you think of. — LN
She start in elementary school she was good then she keep on going then she became a professional wrestler. She fought a 6,6 girl got 2nd place in the final then she keep on going to win the number 1 spot. - RR
I thought like why could only men do sumo wrestling in the olden days. I think that it’s terrible that women never used to be able to do sumo wrestling i think they weren’t able to do sumo wrestling cause maybe back then they couldn’t get strong or fat. Women, traditionally considered polluting in Shintoism, are barred from entering it. — TL
Hiyori must be determined to keep going in sumo wrestling. Some evidence could be that she didn’t quit at the end when she lost the world finals in women wrestling and got 2nd place, also at the end she kept doing sumo wrestling. This proves that she is determined to keep doing sumo wrestling because she didn’t give up. I can tell that she didn’t give up because when she lost the finals, later in the video, she kept practicing sumo wrestling to get better. That's how I can tell she is determined and didn’t give up. — ET
She is very good at sumo. In the video, she got to the finals and got second place. I can infer she is very good at sumo because in the video she got to the finals and she won ⅞ games showed. So I can infer she is very good at sumo. — GS
Hiyori the sumo wrestler seems very excited in the snow. She likes to throw snow at her family and spend time outside. Since she was little she’s liked the snow. For evidence that she liked the snow, Hiyori went to her mom’s house and looked at a few pictures of her and most of them were her outside in the snow. she can be seen running outside. This confirms that she indeed likes spending time outside. — AQ
Little Miss Sumo seems like a very good wrestler, and brave. She fought a 6’6” Russian wrestler and won. She also fights a lot of strong wrestlers. She doesn’t even care what other people think. That is very impressive, she must be very strong to do that, not to mention brave. — AJ
The way she way she sumos, it can hurt her. They like to play in the snow. She enjoys to run and it can really hurt people. Lots of people want her to win. It was really sad when she lost. She kept up every day. Some people said that sumo was not for girls. And she started to sumo as a new kid. — AK

Miss sumo´s grandpa was a bad person. One reason her grandpa was a bad person is because he didn’t like her doing sumo wrestling. Another reason was because he didn’t like her doing her dreams because she was a girl. In summery her grandpa was a bad person because he didn’t want her to pursue her dream because she was a girl. — WK
I thought this movie was amazing because I love sports and I liked her matches. I like that they taught us the art of Sumo wrestling. Also it proves that women can Sumo Wrestle. Also i think that Hiyori is brave because her grandfather even said to quit but she didn’t and became 2nd place in the world. — MG
I thought that this film was good. I liked that the film promoted women’s sports and didn’t say men’s sports were bad. It showed that her dad didn’t support her but she kept trying which motivates people and promotes never giving up. — JI
Little Miss Sumo was a great movie overall and it’s about this girl and her dream was to be a sumo fighter. I have a question about and it’s about how did she start to want to be a sumo fighter and when she starts is in 1st grade and. Then she goes on in her life to try to so that gender in sumo fighting should not be a thing and it’s about how hard you try . — OH

I like Little Miss Sumo because it’s interesting to see sumo wrestlers brawl out. When I was watching this documentary I wondered why sumo wrestlers would wear belts. This documentary wasn’t that bad but it could have been better — RW
Why was she very dedicated to sumo? She was very dedicated to sumo because she wanted to be world #1, and her grandfather told her to quit but she didn’t and she kept on going. Her friends called her chubby and she still didn’t care. She was looked down by men but she kept going. These are some reasons on how she is really dedicated to sumo wrestling. — DM
I really liked this film, i liked that the character was determined to win and when they lost they did not give up. I can see that even for a 2018 film it seemed very truthful. They did not make it seem playful they actually show what they are good for. It had a lot of backgrounds changing for the most part. In my opinion girls wrestling should be more well known it’s a very competitive sport for the women in japan and it shows that girls can do anything too. I liked how little miss sumo had a lot of trust. People should definitely watch this film -BR
I liked Little Miss Sumo because it shows that women can do anything that boys can do. This movie shows a girl and her life. At first it starts on a mountain then it’s her saying her name. I also like how she never gives up even when people tell her that she is chubby and that she shouldn’t play. I don’t like how the subtitles are in Japanese. I couldn’t understand them. When she got to the final she was up against a 6 foot girl she lost. She was sad at first but then she was happy because she still got 2nd place. — DS
The reason that they are talking about is how they are talking and telling about how they can be sumo wrestlers and they can also be good people. And people like how they can be who they want to be and they are being a good person by traveling around the world. And they or I think is that they are showing how they are being strong and to be better and stronger and Hiyori she was a good person and how she is that she is not affected by other people because she fat and chubby she is perfect the way she is. And she was like Russia come bet be already but she is nervous but she lost but she did her best. — MS
I enjoyed this movie, I liked how she kept trying no matter what people called her. I also enjoyed how it showed different parts of her life. There were some things I disliked about it though such as why did the height and weight be so different. That isn't fair. Or the fact she would have to go against men. This is also not fair but overall it was a great movie. — MO
I loved this short film! It gave so many details in a short amount of time. I also liked how they showed some culture of sumo wrestling as well as showing Hiyori's life as a sumo wrestler. I disliked that it was out of date, in 5 years' time women sumo could have changed since then. Also I think it could have been longer, it would have been more interesting as it would have given more information. This is why I think it's a great short film! — MM
I think Little Miss Sumo was a really good short film. It was short but put the message out there. Throughout the short film she was talking about how anybody can do whatever they want. She wrestles at a professional level. She was training for this one big moment to win the professionals women’s sumo league. It was giving the reader a montage of her defeating guy her level which proves anybody can do anything. — XH
I found the movie pretty inspiring, because it shows that girls/women can do anything they put their mind to, even things that are made for boys. She said that she has been sumo wrestling since she was a little kid and even then she beat the boys so that proves that girls can be stronger than boys. And it shows that you can do great things no matter what other people say. — AE
The movie was pretty interesting because of how they give details of why women can’t be sumo wrestlers. The reason why they can’t is because it is against their culture. Based on the evidence we can say that women may never be able to sumo wrestle. — JT

It dose not seem fair that they should be able to be biger then the person they fight. they should be the same size it was a good movie was a little short girls should be able to sumo. — KW
The movie was a bit bland, I felt a lot like the snowball fight or the zoo and the airplane were unimportant to the movie. I got somewhat bored, the actual sumo sequence was exciting though. The fall of so many just for her to get knocked at the very last fighter, it felt bad. But a bit happy - she persevered so much. Again though, there were so many unimportant details in my opinion. — RM
Little Miss Sumo was a boring movie about a girl who wrestles in sumo and goes to the world finals. It was hard to keep up with what happens with all the flashbacks and cuts. It was a really short film with only 18 minutes. And it was super fast which made it very hard to read the subtitles and it all Japanese. So over all id not recommend to watch Little Miss Sumo. — CP
I think “Little Miss Sumo” was invigorating and inspiring. This movie shows what will happen if you work hard every day to try to be your best; She got a silver medal from perseverance and never giving up. Even when she was going against a 6’ 5 woman she believed in herself and had a great match. My reasoning for why this movie was great is because it shows how working hard will pay off in many great ways! -KA
“Little Miss Sumo” was an inspiring short film. I believe that it will give women the empowerment to make changes. I noticed that her father discouraged her from pursuing sumo because the tradition is only men can participate in competitive sumo wrestling. Even though her father said she shouldn’t be allowed to continue, she stuck with it. I also noticed that she always pushes herself to her limit. That made me want to start working harder on my goals. Those are reasons that the movie “Little Miss Sumo” was inspiring. — KP
This movie was very intense and interesting because it was intense when little miss sumo was wrestling. i also really liked the movie. i thought it was pretty cool because i had never learned about this until now. — CBG
I think Little Miss Sumo is inspiring because she never gave up and when she failed she got back and kept trying so it could help some students and people in general. And it could maybe encourage people to wanna sumo wrestle and when she kept getting up and trying and trying that got her to finals which she lost but she still made it to finals and she is still trying so that could help people never give up in life. — KH

Little miss sumo is a sumo wrestling event when japan goes to the championship and she wins all the matches but the final to win it all. She went against a huge girl that was 2 meters tall and she was smaller but then she got really close but lost. — CK

I liked the movie because when she was a young girl her grandpa said sumo is not for girls but she that didn’t stop her from doing sumo. And when she was older she started doing sumo and won most of the time and when she was 20 she was in the finals wrestling a 6,6ft Russian lady.--- KC
I liked it because it shows what a Japanese tradition is like when they sumo wrestle. It was interesting because when they did moves before they wrestled it shows their respect to their religion. She shows young women that it does not matter if you are male or female. Anybody can sumo wrestle. She is a young woman who is brave and can inspire young girls to follow their dreams. — JD
I like the Miss Little Sumo movie because it informs about the woman's side of sumo. One example from the movie she tells you that women`s sumo is ban from professional fights. This proves that it is not wanted so more people know more of sumo will be agreed upon. Was made in 2018 but great camera quality, with easy to read subtitles. — TG
In the film Little Miss Sumo, I thought that Hiyori Kon was brave to show that not only men but women can also do sumo. When Hiyori was young she practiced. She eventually wanted to become the world champion of a year. This is how she could show that not only men could do sumo but women, and especially women in Japan, could do sumo. - JE
