6th Grade Thoughts on … “Our Baby Knows”

This movie is so amazing. I loved this story, it is so touching to watch. — JM

Jake’s parents are racist. I know this because they didn’t want Jake hanging out with the kid because he had darker skin than Jake. This is racist because they are basically saying that darker people are more dangerous and not a good influence, especially during black history month, this is unfair. Another reason that they are racist is they think that the darker skinned people will be more dangerous because of their skin tone. This is unfair to the little boy because he did nothing wrong and he just wants to play with Jake. That is how I know Jake’s parents are racist.  - KF

The movie is really nice, it explains about racism in a kid friendly way, it has very good editing, as well it has clever ways to do stuff for the movie, and there are funny parts in the movie. I really like it and hope you do too!  - EA

“Our Baby Knows” is a good short film. It has an interesting start and got me hooked quite quickly. I also am wondering, “What exactly does he know?”. This short film also has a good message, because it’s talking about slavery and racism and how bad it is. The stories were interesting that the dad told, and the animation was good as well. I would rate this a 5 stars, great short film. - AW

His dad told his son about WWE, about The Rock that his opponent was trading blows then he fought back and won. Another story was the Cavaliers and how they had a losing streak but in 2016 they won the finals. This movie is motivating. - DM

This was a good movie. The movie teaches the son and viewers about racism. I know this because in the movie the boy can't see his friend Jake because Jake's family thinks that the boy  is going to hurt him. This movie is important to kids because they need to learn not to be racist and what being racist means. - LH

The story “Our Baby Knows” is profound. This story is deep and profound because they bring up sensitive topics such as racism and slavery and try to explain it to a young child. Some of the evidence that I have for this is that he had a very important talk with his child that explains why people are racist and it clearly affects the child because not only did he lose his friend he just got told something that flipped his world upside down. My reasoning for this is that the father tells an inspiring story yet sad at the same time to his child and the child gets visibly upset not knowing why someone would do that to him or his family. - KA

In the short film Our Baby Knows, the main character lost his friend Jake. I think he lost his friend because Jake’s parents don't like the main character because of his skin color. When he found out he can’t be friends with Jake he wanted to prove he is a nice person by baking a cake and simple stuff like that. His dad tells him it's not that simple, because his dad knows why he can’t be friends with Jake but doesn’t know how to tell him. - JE

I think ¨Our Baby Knows¨ is an educational but sad story that unfortunately is another kid's reality. It teaches us that we have to learn the sad truth of the real world. The longer it takes you to teach your child the harder it will be for them. You can not hide the fact that they will have to face these things in the future. When the dad is telling his son about people who have done great things even though they may not be the same race as everyone else it shows that he is trying to hint at his son that race doesn't matter and he can accomplish great things if he works hard enough. — LA

I like this short film because it can teach people about racial problems in the world. In the short film the dad is trying to talk to his son about racial problems and why he is losing his friends. Another reason why I like this short film is because it is a fun way to tell a story. Instead of just talking about racial problems the director found ways to tell it better. He told stories in the film that relate to racial problems and tried to cheer his kid up while talking about it. Those two reasons are reasons why I like this short film. — AM

In my opinion this movie ¨Our baby knows ' is a good movie particularly going with the perspective of a dad explaining slavery and racism. But it is still a very good movie to show to kids and also will teach them about slavery and racism. So that's why i think are baby know is a great movie and you might like it to if you'd watch it. — CP

I thought the mini film was good. The dad respected his child and allowed his child to have a secret password. The stories are based on real people. In the mini film the dad is talking about the goals WWE people had and LeBron James.Sadly in the end the son wasn’t able to play with Jack , but he did get to spend time with his father. — MB

I liked the story but noticed that slavery was a part of it because it talked about how a kid's parents did not want him to be friends with him because they think that he will hit his friend. I also liked the animations. They were really cool. — CBG

I noticed that racism is very important here because Jake’s parents do not want their child to play with someone a different race then them, I like this film because it shows us that we should always treat people the same even if they are different. — IJ

The movie is really suspenseful. The mother eavesdropping adds suspense to the entire movie because you do not know what would happen next. This is how this movie was suspenseful. — MM

The short film was a great choice to watch during black history month. It shows the racism of beleiving that darker people are not good people because of their skin. A kid’s parents do not let him play with another kid because of the color of his skin. — NN

I think this movie was very good because in the movie the dad was able to smooth over the subject of slavery. In the movie I noticed that the father didn’t say anything about race or he didn’t say things about how they were black and his friend was white he just said they were different. This supports my claim because it explains how he sorta smoothed over the subject of slavery and made it easier to understand and process. — EG

I think the movie is very good because it is teaching a very sensitive subject in a less impactful way and i think a cool thing that they do is try to lighten the load to the kid by having the cool and funny stories about the sports events and it works because slavery and racism is sensitive and i enjoyed it a lot. — BM

I think this short story was a really good short story because it included a mother,father, and son, talked about stories, and how the son lost a friend. They talked about Lebron James and how he saved the game and the Rock and how he won the WWE and I think adding these features to the story added more excitement and boosted the kids energy and happiness after being told he can’t play with his friend Jake anymore. The story was really good and I think more short films should be inspired by this short story - KC

In the movie I noticed that the dad is telling the son that he can’t be friends with Jake anymore because Jake’s parents are afraid that he will hurt Jake. I think it is important that the dad let his son know that it was not his fault that he can’t be friends with Jake anymore. Jake offers to help mow their lawn and bake them a cake just to prove that he won’t do anything. This proves that he really cares about their friendship. After the dad tells the basketball story he tells his son his ‘favorite story’ which is the story of how they became a family. I think that he did this to distract his son and to make him happy. — ML

Our Baby Knows is a good movie because it talks about sports. One way is that it talks about how Lebron James carried his team to an NBA championship and won. Also it talks about how the rock won his first WWE championship. These are my reasons why Our Baby Knows is a good movie. — JT

In ¨Our Baby Knows¨ the mom did not want to share what was going on. I did not like that she wasn't going to tell him. I´m glad that the dad went and told him though. In my opinion telling the truth is always the right thing no matter the situation. — HJ

I noticed in the movie the dad comes up with stories for his kid by using posters and when he looks at it it turns into animation and I think the animation is good and helps give a visual of what the dad is talking about to his son and I liked how it showed that. And that is why I think the animation is good. — JD

I like this film because it recongnizes racial problems in the world. The dad is trying to tell the kid about slavery, and why his friends parent doesnt want them to hangout. He says that people that look like them, used to be owned by people who look like Jake and his parents. I think that this is a good way to talk to him about the history of people that have the same skin color, and racism. I think that this film is very good. — AW

It was sweet how the father tried to cheer up the son by telling him stories while he was telling the son about the past. It seems to help the son while taking in the information, it must have been hard for the son to learn all of that. But the father was there to comfort him through it and made him feel better. — AJ

The son was confused at the beginning because he did not know why a kid named Jake was not allowed to play with him. But when the dad walked in he was starting to try to cheer up his kid he told stories about WWE and basketball which seem that his son liked. ,the dad and son had a very strong bond in the film the dad obviously doesn’t want to tell his son why him and Jake cant play but in the film it makes it kinda clear about why it is such a wonderful film. I would suggest watching it. — BR

I felt bad for the kid because he lost his friend. It tells us that diversity is still a big deal to some people. By having his friend’s parents not want their kids to play with him, it shows that diversity is still a big deal to some people. — LC

I liked this movie because it was very interesting, and was very entertaining. Also the dad was trying to cheer up his kid by telling his story. The stories were very entertaining, and fun. The dad was very supportive about his son losing his friend. That's why I liked the movie. — HT

The reason why I think this movie is good is because it has a great impact and it is very meaningful to black people. The one thing I really like about this is how the child is so unaware of what slavery is and he asks his dad why he is being treated differently. The one thing I wonder is how the son does not know about slavery, the reason why I say this is because he looks like an average 6th-7th grader and it really confuses me. Lastly, the thing that most interests me is how calm the father is and how he is not being disrespectful to white people so he doesn’t indoctrinate his son into hating White people and to accept others for who they are. To sum all of this up, this movie is very impactful and meaningful to the people who need it. —IT

I really like Our Baby Knows, and the most important lesson is that even in our time now people of color still go through the same thing that they went through 40-50 years ago or even more and makes several people, including me, wonder if our world changed at all. All I see is history repeating itself over and over again and not just in race in every thing and it saddens me to think that we have learned nothing from the past couple 100 years. —EB

I like this story because it is kind of funny and it is kind of sad. So they have a strong bond and I like basketball and the stories I like. —NW

I think the movie Our Baby Knows is an outstanding movie. I believe this because it tells a story of how people can judge just because the color of their skin and how the little boy can’t play with his friend Jake and his dad had to tell him why. I enjoyed how in the movie how the dad gave the kid a option to listen to a happier story first and after the story he also told a happier story. I think that the telling a happy story before and after a sad story can not make the kid so sad. Like normally when someone has a sad conversion they go right into it but in Our Baby Knows they did not want to leave the kid more sad than he already was. So Instead the dad tried to make the kid happier because parents never want to see their kids upset. —KM

I really half liked the short film but it was really slow on getting to the point because I thought it was a scary short film. — IA

I liked the move “Our Baby Knows” it seems like his dad is realizing that his son didn't eat his dinner so he makes his son laugh then tells him the news that why his friends parents don't want them hanging out anymore because it was because of his skin and they had to of thought either he was gonna hurt their son or steal something from them. So his friends parents said that their son shouldnt hang out with him anymore. — RF

I think that our baby knows was a very good film, because it had a lot of things in it that were interesting, and it had really good way of explaining to the kid about why he couldn’t be friends with his friend. — JB

The movie was alright. I thought it was bad that the kid didn't know about racism at his age. I did like the movie though, because the short stories made it very interesting. I also liked it because it addressed real world problems, and the dad tries to smooth it over, just like most dads would. — HC
