Migration

Migration is playing in theaters at the time of writing. Rated PG. Common Sense says 6.

STORY:   B-

It’s an adventure tale with more intense moments than you’d expect from its trailer.

Creepy herons and homicidal chefs may scare the kids. But that’s ok. Stories like this offer opportunities for children to explore their fears and being scared in safe spaces.

PEOPLE:   B

Kumail Nanjiani and Elizabeth Banks deliver genuinely emotional voice performances.

Their work stands out in an overall talented cast. The love and care they have for their ducklings helps them - and by extension, the kids in the audience - move through the many dangers and into safety.

FILM NERD STUFF:   B

The animation’s fine detail makes this world feel real.

This family of ducks gets around. They glide past serene mountains. They soar over vibrant valleys. They dodge towering skyscrapers hiding in the fog.

The film’s message tells us that we can’t be afraid of new places. The ducks’ journey wouldn’t feel genuine (and neither would its message) if the different places they travel to don’t feel real.

GROWING PAINS (Elective Class):   A-

Adventures are neither easy nor fear-free. But they’re an essential part of life.

Growth isn’t always easy or fun while it’s happening. Its benefits only arrive after the hard part is over. Your adventures create a new, better part of you that no one can ever take away.

FINAL COMMENTS:

Kids will love the story, the characters, and the silly jokes. Hopefully they’ll also take the film’s messages to heart.
