STORY:   A-

A thrilling, gripping tale of survival.

Don’t dismiss this movie’s bona fides just because it’s an animated film. It’s equally perfect for kids and adults to enjoy.

All the hallmarks of a great survival flick are present: sudden, life altering disasters; moments of cautious, tentative trust; bursts of ingenious invention. It’s an incredibly well told story.

PEOPLE:   A

You will fall in love with this unforgettable animal crew.

There are no disagreeable sorts on board this ship.

It’s human nature to root for animals, to protect them. That natural urge amplifies our connection to these adorable and fully authentic characters.

FILM NERD STUFF:   A

A massive artistic achievement.

The cinematographer uses camera movement to illustrate the world’s authenticity, zooming swift and low across its landscapes. The movement gives you the chance to check out every beautiful bit of this fantastically detailed and realized world.

ONE BIG LESSON:   A

Live together, die alone.

It seems our world is designed to make us focus on our differences. This film is a call to remember that when it comes down to it, we all want the same thing. And that the best way to achieve the things we all want is to work for them together.

Hopefully, Flow can help us learn that lesson before a disaster decides to give us a crash course.

FINAL COMMENTS:

It’s rare to find a film that has so many reasons to recommend it.

It’s a marvel of modern animation. It’s a new classic in the survival adventure genre. It’s a call for environmental awareness. It’s also a rare film that will be enjoyed equally by kids and adults.

If you’re interested in seeking out new films but are often reluctant to go see “Oscar-y” flicks, go see this one.
